Sheshrao Krushnarao Wankhede Stadium is one of the largest and one of the most renowned cricket stadiums in the country, which is owned by the Mumbai Cricket Association. This unique stadium can accommodate about 45,000 people all at once. Wankhede Stadium was built in 1974 after a dispute between the 'Mumbai Cricket Association' and the 'Cricket Club of India'. The stadium is named after S. K. Wankhede, a politician and also a former secretary of the MCA. Wankhede Stadium earned its fame after it hosted a cricket match between India and West Indies. Many prominent cricket players like Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and so on have displayed their wonderful talents at this stadium. What is more fascinating about this Wankhede Stadium is that this remarkably large stadium was built within a period of 6 months! This stadium hosts International Cricket matches, test matches, ODI matches and more recently, T20 matches, on a regular basis.

Infrastructure
Built within 6 months after considering S.K. Wankhede's suggestion, the Wankhede Stadium is one of the most prestigious stadiums in India. There are 7 stadium stands and three stands have all been named after great cricket players such as, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant and Sachin Tendulkar. The main gates to the stadium ground are named after Polly Umrigar and Vinoo Mankad. Excellent facilities at this stadium include comfortable seats, floodlights and quality food courts located close to the stands to suit the needs of the spectators. The hanging cantilever roofs do not have a beam support, which ensures a better view of the ground. There are 20 lifts that operate between the North and the South Stands of the stadium.

St. Thomas Cathedral is the first Anglican Church in Mumbai, located on D.N. Road, which is sited close to the Wankhede Stadium. The 'Gateway of India' is a fabulous monument built in Hindu and Muslim style of architecture and is also located near the stadium. One can also visit the 'Hanging Gardens' situated in Malabar Hills, Mumbai.

Trivia

The first test match played at Wankhede Stadium was the match between India and West Indies in 1975.
Wankhede Stadium hosted its first ODI or One Day International match, which was between India and Sri Lanka, in 1987.

How To Reach

By Rail
One can reach Wankhede Stadium easily by train as Churchgate Station is situated very close to the stadium. Local trains come from many areas within the city and stop at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway terminus, which is also located close to the stadium.

By Road
Wankhede Stadium is connected by a network of roads therefore reaching the stadium via roads is not an issue. One can hire auto-rickshaws or taxis from the city to get here. Local B.E.S.T buses also make regular stops at the Churchgate Bus Terminus. From here, the Wankhede Stadium is only a 5 minute walk.
